What swim level is my child ready for?

Skills listed below will help you decide which level of swimming lessons your child needs to register for.

Pre-School Classes

Pre-School classes are for children 3 to 5 years of age. Goggles are discouraged during swimming lessons. If the child has an allergy to chlorine please talk to the instructor prior to the first class. The goal is to have your child become water adjusted without goggles so they won’t panic if they end up in the water unexpectedly.

• Pre-School 1: This class is for children who have never had lessons or are afraid of the water. No skills are necessary for this class.
• Pre-School 2: This class is for children who can float unassisted without a floatation device for 5 seconds on their front and 5 seconds on their back.
• Pre-School 3: This class is for children who can glide on their front and back for 2 body lengths. Be able to roll from their front to their back, and from their back to their front and stand up on their own. They must also be able to swim front crawl for 3 body lengths roll onto their back and float for 5 seconds, roll to their front and continue to swim front crawl for 3 more body lengths.
• Pre-School 4: This class is for children who can step into chest deep water and swim front crawl for 5 body lengths, roll to their back and float 15 seconds, roll to their front and then continue to swim front crawl for 5 more body lengths.

Level Classes

Level classes are for children 6 years of age and older. Goggles are also discouraged for level age classes. Again, we want children to become water adjusted without goggles in case they end up in the water unexpectedly. Please talk to the instructor prior to the first class if they have an allergy to the chlorine.

• Level 1: This class is for children who have never had lessons or who is scared of the water. No skills are necessary.
• Level 2: This class is for children who can float unassisted without a floatation device for 5 seconds on their front and 5 seconds on their back.
• Level 3: This class is for children who can step into chest deep water and swim front crawl for 5 body lengths, roll to their back and float for 15 seconds, then roll to their front and continue swimming front crawl for 5 more body lengths.
• Level 4: This class is for children who can jump into deep water from the side, swim front crawl side breathing for 15 yards, tread water for 30 seconds, then turn on their back and swim elementary backstroke for 15 yards.
• Level 5: This class is for children who can enter the deep water with a feet first entry, swim front crawl 25 yards, change direction and position as necessary and swim elementary backstroke 25 yards. They must also be able to swim breaststroke for 15 yards, change direction and position as necessary and swim back crawl for 15 yards.
• Level 6: This class is for children who can dive into deep water and swim 50 yards front crawl and 50 yards elementary back stroke. Swim 25 yards breaststroke, change direction and position and swim 25 yards backcrawl.
